SPH simulations of high-speed collisions between asteroids and comets

چکیده
We studied impact processes by means of smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. The method was applied to modeling formation main-belt families during the cometary bombardment (either early or late, ${\sim}\,3.85\,{\rm Gy}$ ago). If asteroids were bombarded comets, as predicted Nice model, hundreds asteroid (catastrophic disruptions diameter $D \ge 100\,{\rm km}$ bodies) should have been created, but observed number is only 20. Therefore we computed a standard set 125 simulations collisions between representative = and high-speed icy projectiles (comets). According our results, largest remnant mass $M_{\rm lr}$ similar in low-speed collisions, due appropriate scaling with effective strength $Q_{\rm eff}$, fragment lf}$ exhibits systematic differences - it typically smaller for craterings bigger super-catastrophic events. This trend does not, however, explain non-existence old families. respective parametric relations can be used other statistical (Monte-Carlo) models better understand asteroidal populations.

Asteroids, Comets, and Planet Formation
The solar system includes numerous small objects, generally classifiable as asteroids, comets, or interplanetary dust. Asteroids and comets are of considerable importance in the study of the terrestrial planets. The impacts of these bodies with the planets have repeatedly reshaped the planets' surfaces, redistributed the surface materials and changed their chemistry and mineralogy. In addition,...

In the past decade, new observations and new research tools have afforded us a better understanding of the interrelationships between comets and asteroids. The extensive automated surveys for near-Earth objects (NEOs) have serendipitously discovered many objects in comet-like orbits. Dynamical simulation codes have improved to the point where we can simulate the detailed orbital behavior of lar...

Asteroids and comets dissipate energy when they rotate about any axis different from the axis of the maximal moment of inertia. We show that the most efficient internal relaxation happens at twice the frequency of the body’s precession. Therefore earlier estimates that ignore the double frequency input underestimate the internal relaxation in asteroids and comets. We suggest that the Earth’s se...

متن کاملPlanetary Satellites, Asteroids, Comets and Meteors
Asteroids, mainly rocky or metallic bodies in the inner solar system, orbit the Sun in various distinct populations (planet-crossers, main-belt asteroids, trans-Neptunian Edgeworth-Kuiper belt objects, Centaurs in the outer planetary region) between which there are transfers over substantial timescales. For example the main belt is the main reservoir replenishing the Earth-crossing asteroids, t...
